Sister N, because of some sickness, she is almost blind although she can see little. Therefore, someone suggested that she own a cane, but sister N said, “If I hold a cane, one of my hands will always be occupied, so having a cane will cause more danger andstress. Also, I’ll forget to take it somewhere. I’m okay now. No problem.” She refused toown a cane. However, she does not have enough sight so she is slow to move, that is why when she goes shopping, she is often bumped by the people around, or when she is in line for the cash register, people would frequently cut in front of her.

To sister N, so she won’t have to face these dangers or be misunderstood by others, Istrongly recommended she own a white cane. By doing so, people around her canacknowledge that she is physically challenged. And at last, she accepted to own a caneand started to use it.

Owning the cane changed her life more than expected. Even in crowded places, shewasn’t bumped by the people around anymore. Because people see her white cane, theywould let her in line with courtesy. When sometimes she stops in front of the stairs, and people ask her if she needs help. This cane has the power to protect her and help her because people know what the cane is for and what it represents!

We too who are spiritually blind as sinners must admit that we need to hold a spiritualcane. “No, I can see somehow. If I hold a cane, I cannot walk freely anymore and one ofmy hands is occupied. And also, I’ll forget to take it somewhere. It is very inconvenient. I’m fine. I can live without a cane.” Old sinful nature may say like this. But we Christians shall hold the Cross which God gave to us as the spiritual cane. That is not a burden, but rather something that brings the kindness of God, guides us to His light, protects us from evil, but rather assures our freedom to live in Christ!
